Cryptic Crosswords

This group is aimed at beginners and will enable members to understand how to analyse and solve cryptic crossword clues. It will take place weekly for 7 weeks. Topics will include types of wordplay (e.g. anagrams, hidden words, homophones, sandwiches and reversals) and how to spot them, common abbreviations used in cryptic clues, the role of punctuation in clues, and how some cryptic crossword setters seek to challenge us with their clues. You will need to purchase a workbook to participate in this course ‘Learn How to Solve Cryptic Crosswords’ by Henry Howarth. This is available from Lulu.com at a current price of £13.80 plus postage. This site has the most upto-date-edition, which is the one we will be using. It is advisable to order the book in good time before our first session because they do not retain a large stock and print on request.
